Background Design

In order to properly understand the environment necessary for my project, I would reread the scenario I prompted back in ANI170 Project 1, which was stated as below;

"The scene is depicted within a quiet, rather archaic room, coloured and decorated with different tones of blue and purple rocks detailed with tapestries and etchings that appear to be of another world, as evident by its location within the dark, cold reaches of space, across a world unheard of by mankind, and unknown to our time. Lunar (the chosen character), a young descendant from a long lineage of Gods dedicated to the Moon, stands centre in the room, surrounded by small, child-like universal creatures that appear to be notable composed of stars which relate to zodiac signs. Each of these Zodiac Constellations appear to have their own bed/cradle, depicted with their sign at the front and composed purely of gases and dust. This is largely inspired by how “some nebulas are formed when gas and dust are thrown out during a supernova, and how when these regions become dense enough, they can spawn new stars, which is why nebulas are sometimes called ‘stellar nurseries’” (May, 2024, para. 2). While some of them appear resting, others are floating about in this star nursery, circling around Lunar, as he continues to use his magic to cradle and hold them with a soft force to gently soothe them to a peaceful slumber. He appears rather amused by some of their antics, as well as demonstrating a feeling of peace through the serenity of standing in the middle of his people’s proud work, guarding and protecting what’s left at all costs."

While some of these descriptions had been changed and altered through the course of the unit, the environment would still remain relatively the same, which would then lead me to using canyons, abandoned historical sites, castles, nurseries and even forests to create a more fictionalised moon within a Mood board. I would especially seek further inspiration by using photographs of my backyard garden in addition to nearby clouds that I integrated as references for my props in ANI170 Project 2.

After having completed my research stage, and composing a mood board as a guide, I would then begin to experiment with a series of Environment thumbnails to provide an array of possible ideas using ‘Adobe Photoshop CC.’
